Case12:

Mrs. M. S., 48 years old lady (Patient reference no.: 5316), had itching sensation with red spots around the ankle about 5 months before she reported to us. She consulted a skin specialist for this and he prescribed her some ointment but it continued to spread to the knees. Within a month, it increased and spread to the upper and lower limbs and scalp. Biopsy diagnosed the condition as Lichen Planus and she was given steroids (Prednisolone) for about 6 weeks and it helped her for a couple of days initially but later the lesions appeared all over the body with intense itching and burning. Stress and lack of sleep were the factors that worsened her state.

In the meantime, she also developed Shingles (Herpes zoster) due to low body resistance and was prescribed antibiotics for the same.

There was no history of lichen planus or any other major illness in the family.

She also had hypothyroidism since 10 years and was on Eltroxin (Thyroid supplement) for the same and apart from this there was no history of any other major illness in her past. She had had hysterectomy 13 years ago and her ovaries had been removed 7 years ago. She also had complaints of backache and varicose veins since her delivery 25 years back.

She was a vegetarian, with craving for all vegetarian, south and north Indian foods.

She would like winters and less humid climate. Her appetite and bowel movements were normal. She would sweat normally previously but after the removal of her ovaries, she would sweat excessively. She would not get good sleep and would keep awake till 2-3 am.

She was a housewife and stayed with her husband and twin daughters. She had no other major stress as such except that she was worried about the marriage of her daughters. She was cheerful in general, but after her marriage she had feelings of being exploited, misunderstood and neglected; she would react by crying or shouting at such times. Reading was the only hobby that she pursued.

Based on this case history, she was prescribed Thuja 200 for her Lichen planus. There was improvement in itching and burning within 2 weeks and the lesions gradually started reducing. Within four months of treatment, her lesions had settled down. Next course of four months medicines helped further. Few new eruptions that came on her palms and hands, also improved within the next two months. With a total course of 8 months, the lichen planus lesions all over the body had settled down completely, and the hyperpigmented spots also lightened. There was no itching or burning. Her bodyache was also better.

This case illustrates, that steroids may help temporarily but they suppress the ailment, which aggravates the disease on discontinuation of steroids. Steroids also lower your immunity making you more susceptible to other diseases whereas homoeopathy treats at the root level, eradicating the disease from the system without any side-effects in shortest time duration and effectively.

Case13:

This is a case of Master R.N. aged 16 years who was suffering with Lichen Planus since the past 6 months. He reported to the clinic on September 3, 2005 with papular eruptions with hyper pigmentation. These eruptions had first appeared on his right knee and then it was spreading further to other parts as well.

He had marked pruritis and he used to keep getting new eruptions since the past 6 months. The pruritis used to increase when he used to come in contact with warm water. These eruptions were spreading gradually, where as on the other hand there were some few old eruptions which were getting healed and leaving behind hyperpigmented marks.

He was now using Dipsalic ointment as a local application. He was under some form of homoeopathic treatment for the past 6 months.

Associated with his skin complaints, he used to complain of repetitive sneezing episodes with watering from the nose since the past 6 months. These complaints were wrose immediately after he was awake. When ever he was exposed to dust or every night just before sleeping the bouts used to be more severe intensity than what it used to be during the day time.

Constitution:
This was a lean boy with dark complexion. His weight on examination was 39 Kgs.

Personal history:
He used to crave for sweets a lot. However he disliked sour food items. He had profuse perspiration especially on his back. He could not tolerate hot climate and used to fee very uncomfortable.

His sleep was sound and he used to get many dreams of ghosts and falling from height.

Family background:
He used to live with his father (aged 45, working as a technical officer in the central government office), Mother (aged 37 years who was a home maker), and also had a younger sister who was 9 years old and was studying in the fourth class.

Mind:
He was very tensed and anxious about his studies. He used to get very nervous before his exams. He was very slow in all the activities. He had fear of dark. He was timid by nature and very lazy.

Family History:
His paternal grandfather had diabetes, hypertension as well as eczema.

Prescription details:
Based on his case details he was prescribed the homoeopathic remedy Tuberculinum in the 1M potency. He was then called after a month.

Follow up details:
Initially after a month when he did come up, there was no change in the eruptions. Even the itching that he used to complain remained the same. He also had a few new eruptions during the course of this 1 month treatment on his abdomen as ell as hips. The sneezing that he used to get was reducing and even the running nose had come down to a certain extent.

He was made to continue on the same line of treatment and called father another 2 weeks. So in all after a period of 6 weeks after starting the treatment, the Lichen Planus eruptions on his knees, feet, upper limbs were commencing to heal. However the eruptions on the other areas were still the same. By now the sneezing as well as the discharge from the nose had decreased dramatically.

He has by now even tapered the application of Dipsalic ointment. There were necessary changes made in the line of treatment from time to time as far as the dosage and the repetition of the medicines is concerned.

During the course of the treatment he continued to get new eruptions but the number went on reducing slowly and gradually with time. His weight had also increased by 1 kg.

After the completion of almost a year's treatment there have been some eruptions over his knees which have completely gone away. Also the eruptions that were there on his right hand are no longer visible.

He is still advised to continue treatment in order to see positive results in the remaining eruptions as well.

Remarks:
The patient's parents were so happy to see the results. They claimed that this disease could not be diagnosed accurately by most doctors that they went to, and every other conventional doctor remarked that there is no cure for this skin ailment and their son might have to live with for the rest of his life. Thanks to the healing of Homoeopathy.
