The major treatment for Lichen Planus in the conventional medicine consists of
the use of steroids or cortisone
in various forms. Local application with cream (for skin lichen planus), oral or
injectable cortisone, cortisone mouthwash (in case of oral Lichen Planus)
or cortisone gel (for genital Lichen Planus) are usually administered depending on the
location of affection. Sometimes certain antihistaminic agents are used to control itching. Depending on the indications, one of the following measures is applied, as per the modern medicine.
- Corticosteroids
- Symptomatic treatment for itching
- Dapsone
- PUVA
(Photo-chemotherapy, can
cause cancer as side effect)Cyclosporine
Surgery
It should be noted that the major and the prime line of treatment in
conventional medicine are corticosteroids, which is more often a suppressive measure.
Major concerns, limitations and adverse effects of Cortisone can be
summarized as under:
- Temporary and superficial relief. Lichen Planus resurfaces in most cases
on stopping its use.
- Dependency
- Rebound effects: More severe eruptions on the same or
other parts of the body on stopping cortisone
- Systemic side effects on various body organs
- Suppressive effects on immune system
Huge experience at Life Force suggests that the conventional use of cortisone
is not a long term answer to Lichen Planus.
